Deosai Plateau Tour
Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan
Deosai Plateau Tour
Overview & Mountain Character
“A high-altitude wilderness voyage traversing the vast steppe of Deosai National Park, celebrated for its glacial lakes, vibrant summer flora, and pristine wildlife habitat.”
Sprawled across the high-elevation boundary of Skardu, Astore, and Kharmang at an average elevation of 4,114m, the Deosai Plateau is famously revered as the 'Land of Giants.' Ranking as the planet's second-highest plateau behind Tibet's Changtang, this protected 3,000-square-kilometer wilderness represents a core section of the alpine Karakoram-Tibetan steppe eco-region. In the warm summer window, the barren tableland transforms into a vibrant carpet of wildflowers, braided waterways, and clear tarns that sustain Himalayan brown bears, golden marmots, and migratory birds. This safari-style overland tour provides intimate contact with untouched alpine wilderness without the demands of technical mountaineering.

Route Timeline & Rotation Plan
Touch down at Islamabad International Airport, where our airport representative welcomes you and coordinates private transport to your hotel. Dedicate the remainder of the day to resting, adjusting to the time zone, and preparing for the expedition north.
Commence the northward road journey from the capital city, tracking along the Karakoram Highway toward Chilas as low-lying green hills gradually give way to the rugged foothills of the Karakoram.
Travel deeper into Baltistan alongside the winding gorge of the Indus River, ascending toward Skardu amid dramatic, arid canyon landscapes and soaring rock walls.
Spend the day discovering cultural and natural attractions around Skardu, including the ancient Buddhist carvings at Manthal Buddha Rock, followed by visits to Shangrila Lake and the emerald waters of Upper Kachura Lake.
Ascend by vehicle toward the tableland of Deosai, pausing at turquoise Satpara Lake before entering the sprawling grasslands to pitch camp in the high wilderness.
Dedicate the entire day to exploring the open prairies of Deosai National Park, highlighted by a visit to the calm waters of Sheosar Lake, which mirrors the snowy ramparts of Nanga Parbat.
Leave the high plateau behind and descend into the pine-covered valleys of Astore, heading to the scenic basin of Rama Lake situated beneath the Raikot flank of Nanga Parbat.
Spend an unhurried day wandering through the green terraces of Astore Valley, enjoying crisp alpine air, glacier melt streams, and the genuine hospitality of local farming communities.
Rejoin the Karakoram Highway and travel north toward Gilgit, pausing at the unique geographic point where the Karakoram, Himalaya, and Hindukush mountain systems meet.
Follow the Hunza River on a scenic drive up to Karimabad, taking in stepped orchards and unobstructed sightlines of Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar.
Immerse yourself in Hunza's history by visiting the fortified royal residences of Altit and Baltit Forts, concluding the day with an evening excursion to Duiker for a 360-degree sunset over the valley.
Drive to the 4,733-meter crest of Khunjerab Pass along the Chinese border, exploring high-altitude national park scenery before returning down to the frontier town of Sost.
Begin traveling south through Upper and Central Hunza toward Gilgit, enjoying another look at roadside glaciers, steep scree cones, and rocky canyon walls.
Weather permitting, navigate the switchbacks of Babusar Top into the Kaghan Valley, checking into a comfortable hotel in the alpine town of Naran.
Enjoy an open day of relaxation in Naran to explore local riverbanks, forested trails, or nearby alpine tarns nestled in the Himalayan foothills.
Drive south toward Islamabad, incorporating an afternoon stop at the UNESCO World Heritage museum and ruins of Taxila to view the ancient treasures of Gandhara.
Conclude the tour with a morning exploration of modern Islamabad's key landmarks, followed by a coordinated transfer to Islamabad International Airport for your departing international flights. End of services.
